what were the major challenges Princess Victoria faced during her reign
- Succession Crisis: Victoria was born into a succession crisis, where she was fifth in line to the throne. Her father, the Duke of Kent, was fourth in line, and her mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, was a minor royal from a German duchy. This made Victoria's claim to the throne uncertain.
- Unfavorable Public Perception: Victoria was initially seen as unattractive and shy, which further complicated her path to the throne. Her uncle, Prince George of Cambridge, even called her appearance "ridiculous" and her name "absurd" due to its French origin.
- Mother's Influence: Victoria's mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, was known to be greedy and manipulative. She sought to use her daughter as a tool to gain power and influence within the royal family, which added to the challenges Victoria faced.
- Lack of Experience: Victoria was only 18 years old when she became queen, which meant she had limited experience in governance and diplomacy. This inexperience led to her initial reluctance to resume full public duties, which further weakened her position.
- Rebellion and Republican Sentiment: Victoria's early seclusion and perceived lack of involvement in governance led to a strong republican movement in Britain. This movement questioned the necessity of a monarch and sought to replace the monarchy with a republic.
- Assassination Attempts: Victoria faced seven attempts on her life between 1840 and 1882, which significantly impacted her popularity and her ability to perform her duties.
- Changing Role of the Monarchy: During Victoria's reign, the role of the monarch began to shift from a powerful figure to a more symbolic one. This change was driven by the growth of parliamentary power and the increasing importance of the Prime Minister. Victoria had to adapt to this new role while maintaining her influence and authority.
- Personal Losses: Victoria faced significant personal losses, including the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, and the loss of her children to marriage and other family commitments. These personal losses affected her mental and emotional well-being, which further complicated her role as queen.
